Let’s Step to It: 4th May

Hello Team Let’s Step to It! As I mentioned in my email reminder on Monday this is the final update for Let’s Step to It. I’m leaving Gateshead OPA and starting a new job as a Community Link Worker in east Gateshead next week so this project is ending. Thank you for all your lovely messages. It’s been a pleasure walking with you all and it’s great to hear that the project has inspired so many of you to start and continue walking regularly. I’ll still be popping into GOPA HQ so I’m sure I’ll see many of you again over a cuppa!

Since we started our virtual walking journey back in November 2020 we’ve walked nearly 50 million steps, the equivalent of walking around the equator! Very impressive!!

undefined

We’ve visited 25 locations across 4 continents and braved temperatures from -28c at the North Pole to 33c in Alice Springs. We’ve seen whales, dolphins, tigers, polar bears and Dingo as well as enjoying both the Northern and Southern lights and visiting some of the world’s most iconic places. Here’s a round-up of our virtual journey. Well done everyone!

Keep walking and keep sharing your pictures on our Friends of Gateshead Older People’s Assembly Facebook page, we love to see them! You can also join in our weekly Health Walks with Nicola every Friday. Contact us to find out more. I’m also sending you all paper copies of our team award, your individual distance award and our round up.

Let’s Step to It: 20 April 2021

Hello Team Let’s Step to It!

What a beautiful week it’s been! And what a difference to the previous week!

Clear blue skies and warm weather, perfect for springtime walks.

We walked 823 sunny miles this week in the UK. We’ve left New Zealand and hopped over to the USA. We started out in San Diego in southern California and walked up the coast via Long Beach, Los Angeles, Malibu and Santa Barbara, ending in San Francisco.

There’s so much to do in this iconic city. You can walk or cycle across the famous Golden Gate Bridge, visit Alcatraz Island whose infamous inmates included Al Capone and the ‘Birdman’, or visit Fisherman’s Wharf for some delicious seafood and to spot the resident sea lions. If you’re wanting to rest your legs you can take a ride on the cable cars but if you’re still up for some more walking you can hike up the Twin Peaks for some amazing views of the city. Enjoy!

Joyce shared a photo some springtime colour from her walk in Saltwell Park this week.

Well done everyone!

Let’s Step to It: 8 March 2021

Hello Team Let’s Step to It!

It’s been a bit cold and blustery in the UK this week but we’ve walked an impressive 925 miles.

We’ve reached Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. There’s plenty of city sightseeing to keep you occupied and for any foodies and wine lovers, it’s only a one hour drive to the Barossa Valley, one of Australia’s oldest grape growing regions.  Here you can enjoy lots of fresh produce, wine tours and plenty of restaurants!

Here are some photos from your walks this week:

Margaret spotted a goose balancing on one leg and Joyce found a ‘Lost Glove Tree’ at Windy Nook nature reserve:

Let’s Step to It: 16 Feb 2021

Hello Team Let’s Step to It!

Well it’s been a freezing cold week and not very conducive to walking in the UK but we managed an impressive 795 miles none the less so I thought we all deserved some sun, sea and sand for our efforts!

We’ve arrived at Belitung Island in Indonesia. Renowned for its crystal clear waters, white sand and granite boulder beaches. You can go snorkelling or swimming in the calm, shallow waters. Or just relax on the beach with a drink and put your feet up! You’re welcome!

Some more photos from your walks…

Joyce’s view from Windy Nook looked a bit different from the week before!

Linda shared some more photos of her walks: Jesmond Dene transformed in the snow and the lovely Betty making a new friend!

…and I found some early signs of warmer weather in Elswick Park last week. Spring is coming!

undefined

And last but not least, a warm welcome to Hellen who has joined our virtual walking team this week. It’s lovely to have you!

Well done everyone!

Let’s Step to It: 9 Feb 2021

Hello Team Let’s Step to It!

Despite a very wet week we’ve still managed an impressive 1,431,830 steps which is 716 miles!

We’ve taken a little plane journey to Phuket in Thailand and from there we’ve walked to Singapore where we’re enjoying some well-earned cocktails at the Raffles Hotel, lovely!

undefined

Last week I asked if anyone had any photos to share of their walks….

Here’s Joyce’s view from her walks at Windy Nook. Look at that huge sky!

And Linda shared some photos of her walks with the gorgeous Betty…look at that gorgeous face!

Let’s Step to It: 2 Feb 2021

Hello Team Let’s Step to It!

The weather was more conducive to walking this week and you didn’t disappoint! We walked 761 miles taking us from Kathmandu in the foothills of the Himalayas to the low lying Sundarbans of Bangladesh.

The Sundarbans (meaning beautiful forest in Bengali) are the largest mangrove forests in the world and are a UNESCO heritage site. They are home to the only population of Bengal Tigers.

undefined

This week, as well as individual awards, I thought it was time for a team award.

So far we’ve walked a total of 17,667,649 steps, equivalent to 8,834 miles!

That has earned us our ‘Earth Diameter Award’

Simply put, as a team we’ve walked from Gateshead to Australia if we’d drilled a hole and gone through the centre of the earth! Well done everyone!

If anyone has any photos from their walks that they would like to share, just send them in by text or email. Here’s one of mine. This was taken near Tanfield railway a couple of weeks ago…I love how crisp that horizon line is! :)

Well done everyone!

Let’s Step to It: Week 7

Congratulations everyone!

Last week we arrived at our destination a week early after walking through Germany, Finland, and Norway before arriving at the North Pole.

So for our final week before Christmas we thought we’d figure out where we would have got to if we had walked in a different direction.

This week we added another 1,712,987 (856 miles) to our step count and our combined steps have got us to the Taj Mahal in Agra, India!

The mausoleum was commissioned in 1632 by the reigning emperor to house the body of his favourite wife.

undefined

Over the last 7 weeks we have:

  • Walked 10,615,393 steps, which is 5,308 miles

  • Burned around 424,640 calories. That’s around 1,415 mince pies!

It’s been an amazing effort from everyone and you should all be very proud of where we’ve got to as a team.

We’re having a break over Christmas and we’ll start counting steps again on Monday 4th January 2021. We’ll start again from the Taj Mahal and see where 2021 takes us!

Well done everyone!

Have a very Merry Christmas. Stay safe. :)

Let’s Step to It: Week 5

Greetings from Svalbard!

Hello everyone! As a group we’ve walked a total of 1,778,654 steps this week which is a fabulous 889 miles! In total we’ve walked 7,168,648 steps, 3,584 miles.

We left Tromso in Norway last week and we’ve now left mainland Europe and are well on our way to the North Pole!

We’ve reached the islands of Svalbard, just south of the Arctic Ocean, about halfway between Norway and the North Pole. The most iconic residents of Svalbard are the polar bears, and you might also see some reindeer and arctic foxes.

Winter temperatures here are around minus 18c so we hope you’ve packed some warm clothes and like last week, we’re in the polar winter so the sun won’t rise for another couple of months.  Don’t worry about the cold though, we can all have a well earned cocktail at the Radisson Blu Polar Bear Hotel in Longyearbyen, which also has a sauna and outdoor hot tubs to ease away any aches from our walk!

Let’s Step to It: Week 4

Hallo from Let’s Step to It!

It’s been another fantastic week everyone! As a group we’ve walked a total of 1,784,982 steps this week which is an incredible 892 miles! In total we’ve walked 5,301,028 steps, 2,651 miles.

We left Hudiksvall in Sweden last week and we made it to Santa’s Village in Lapland, Finland. Hope you had your lists ready!! But we didn’t stop there!

undefined

Our huge step count means we’ve now made it to Tromso on the north coast of Norway. We’re 187 miles inside the Arctic Circle now meaning from 28 November it will be permanently dark and the sun won’t rise above the horizon again until 14 January. What that does mean though is it’s a great place to enjoy the Northern Lights!

Six people achieved their 20,000 step, 10 mile award

Four people achieved their 50,000 step, 25 mile award

Well done everyone. Keep Stepping!

We’re on our way to the North Pole now and hopefully we’ll get there in time to help out on the 24th!
